Having already devoured one of those series during Dark Reads October, I knew that I had to read the other.

Does it get better? I know it’s supposed to be dark but I don’t want to read this girl get brutalized for the whole book and fall in love with her captor anyway. When I think about dark romances that have been recommended to me over the years, the two that come to mind first definitely have to be Monsters in the Dark by Pepper Winters and The Dark Duet by CJ Roberts. Captive in the Dark is just depressing me. And although the hero was a psychopath rapist kidnapper who should be in prison, the heroine was in a massive house on a private tropical island with home cooked meals and endless supply of books, movies and a tv. It has almost 70,000 reviews on goodreads!! I mean with "Twist Me" although it was fucked up, I still found it entertaining. I assumed with the popularity of Captive in the Dark it couldn’t be that bad or horrific. I don’t mean to insult people’s taste but what is the appeal of the book? Is it meant to be like a horror read? I’m just confused. I know it’s a “dark romance” but is this even a romance in any capacity? This girl is brutalized over and over again by the supposed hero? She’s chained up and left in the dark for long period of time? As a woman I’m just having a hard time reading this. I have this compulsion to finish every book I start but I’m genuinely questioning if I can finish it. So I thought this couldn’t be that bad.īut this book…I’m almost half way though it and I’ve stopped so many times because I can’t get through it.

Although I initially found it hard to read I got into it eventually and actually ended up enjoying it. I knew their would likely be rape in it which made me a bit wary but I managed to read Twist Me by Anna Zaires which also had the kidnapping /non-con theme.

I recently got into dark romance and Captive in the Dark by CJ Roberts was recommended a lot so I decided to read it.
